Baptism holds deep spiritual significance in the Bible as a sacred act of admittance and conversion. In the Gospels, we read where John the Baptist was baptizing individuals in the Jordan River, calling them to repentance and preparing them for the arrival of Jesus Christ, the Savior. This undertaking was figurative, cleansing sin and signifying the purification of the heart in expectation of the coming Messiah. Furthermore, baptism is seen as an essential sacrament, symbolizing the believer’s identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4 KJV).
