A Foreshadow (David / Jesus)

It is obvious in Psalm 22 David is suffering tremendously. You can sense the plea of David’s cry to God for deliverance. David felt less than nothing as he described himself as a worm. His description of a worm is probably as low as one can get when feeling mistreated or considered possibly a low life. Although, he was going through such an eccentric deal, David still knew how to call on the Father. He cried out, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” which is the same cry Jesus shouted in Matthew 27:46 when he was on the cross. “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

Psalm 22:18 addressed garments being parted and casting lots upon my vesture. The Messiah (Jesus) would suffer this humiliating encounter on the cross, which was a great insult to human dignity to rob someone of their clothes leaving them naked and deprived. “And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots:  that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, they parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.” (Matthew 27:35)

David foreshadowed what Jesus would say and go through hundreds of years later. David was clearly undergoing some great trial, but through his suffering, like Jesus, gained victory. David believed that God would deliver him from the hands of the enemy and Jesus knew his Father would deliver Him.

Consider this, if we continue to be prayerful and believe God, He will carry us from suffering to immeasurable joy.
